Who would have thought you could find Christmas inspiration in sunny Florida? I certainly wasn't expecting Christmas to feel much like Christmas when my family and I decided to make the move here from Maryland a few years ago. After all, our first December here was around 80 degrees...a far cry from the frosty cold holiday weather we were used to up north.
But as I watched my husband putting the Christmas lights across the roof that year, wearing a T-shirt and shorts, with a burning orange sun setting across a bright pink sky behind him, I realized there was a completely different kind of holiday inspiration to be found. Although certainly not the traditional colors you might initially think of when it comes to holiday decorating, there is definitely something to be said for the colorful pinks, greens, yellows, and purples of tropical themed Christmas decorations. You just can't help but feel festive while wrapping brightly colored Christmas lights around a palm tree in warm, balmy weather.
And with non-traditional holiday colors and styles becoming so much more poplular recently, it is easier than ever to add a touch of the tropics to the Christmas festivities, no matter what climate you live in. Don't have a palm tree on hand to decorate? Artificial Christmas trees have become far from typical lately, and the traditional pine trees are no longer the only choice. How about one of those nifty pastel colored Christmas trees? (Yes, as silly as it may sound, I actually broke down and bought myself a mini pink feather tree last Christmas!) Hang a few brightly colored, tropical Christmas ornaments from it, and you have a little bit of island paradise faster than you can say "Margaritaville."
So, forget the egg nog for just a minute (Pina Colada anyone?), and enjoy a tiny bit of the tropics at Christmas time...even if it IS only 10 degrees outside.
